These lesions can be removed or diminished in appearance by the following techniques:

Shave excision: The sebaceous hyperplasia is carefully removed using shave technique so that it becomes flush with the surrounding skin

Electrodessication: Light use of heat is used for careful destruction of the sebaceous hyperplasia

Frequently Asked Questions

What triggers sebaceous hyperplasia?

Sebaceous hyperplasias are enlarged sebaceous glands (“oil glands”), most commonly seen on the forehead or cheeks. There is often a genetic predisposition, but a targeted skincare routine can help reduce the prevalence.

How do you get rid of sebaceous hyperplasia?

Using topical treatments such as retinoids may minimize the appearance (and possibly even reduce the chance of further lesions developing). However once developed, a light electrocautery done in office can be immensely helpful for treatment.

What foods cause sebaceous hyperplasia?

While not caused by foods, sebaceous hyperplasias can be more commonly seen in patients prone to experiencing acne. For some people dietary triggers for acne may include dairy products, certain proteins, and/or sugary foods.

Can sebaceous hyperplasia become cancerous?

Sebaceous hyperplasias are benign. However they can appear similar to basal cell carcinomas, so a clinical examination is important for an accurate diagnosis.

Can you squeeze out sebaceous hyperplasia?

Squeezing is a no no! Squeezing may result in scars, not to mention not resolve the original lesion of concern. A tailored skincare routine and office based procedures are the way to go.
